WAGs (noun phrase)
A frankly silly acronym and phrase coined by newspaper copy editors to describe the pampered wives and girlfriends of rich soccer players.
On the subject of acronyms and abbreviated phrases, newspaper copy editors have contributed a lot to shaping our language into short, witty headlines and to creating new meanings at the same time. Once we thought we knew what a wag was: someone who liked telling funny stories. But now WAGs are wives and girlfriends, usually of millionaire soccer players. These charming companions of sporting heroes turn up to major events as if on a fashion parade. Some are already famous in their own right, like ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, or Cheryl Cole of the group Girls Aloud. Others have been plucked from relative obscurity where they worked as waitresses, personal trainers, or beauticians. Now they compete for the attention of the cameras in their designer clothes, flashing (mainly) fake tans and $50,000 diamond accessories. All of those assets, plus a strong, handsome man with a luxury pad in Liverpool, Cheshire, or Mayfair, should be enough to make any girl smile when the photographers call for it.
